Transitioning delicate seedlings from the cozy, controlled climate of an indoor apartment straight out into the harsh elements of the real world can shock or kill them overnight. The process of “hardening off” bridges this gap by gradually introducing your plants to wind, direct sun, and fluctuating outdoor temperatures.
The 7-to-10 Day Timeline
Plan to start the hardening-off process about a week to ten days before you intend to permanently plant your seedlings outdoors or move them to a sunny balcony.
Day 1 to 3 (Shade and Shelter)

Place your seed trays outside in a completely shaded, wind-protected spot for just one to two hours on the first day, slowly increasing their time outdoors by an hour each day.
Day 4 to 7 (Sun and Breeze)
Gradually introduce your plants to morning sunlight and gentle breezes, keeping a close eye on their soil moisture since outdoor air dries out potting mix much faster than indoor air.

Day 8 to 10 (Full Exposure)

Leave your seedlings outside overnight if nighttime temperatures remain safely above their threshold, preparing them for their permanent home.
